RSS and other tools for catalogers

At the monthly catalogers meeting in August, we discussed some tools for following the latest information on cataloging.

There are a number of blogs available that keep up on the latest news, rule changes, and other information of interest to catalogers and one way to follow all of this is using a blog aggregator.

We discussed two of the most popular, Bloglines and Google Reader, and also demonstrated briefly how to use Microsoft Feeds from within Internet Explorer 7 or above.

In order to subscribe to Bloglines or Google Reader, you need to set up an account by entering an email address and password – you can use your existing Google account for Google Reader.  Then to add blogs to your aggregator, click on the orange RSS feed tab in the address bar on a blog or other site that provides an RSS feed.

To use Microsoft Feeds, just click on the RSS tab on any website that allows feeds (which looks like a little orange box and should be visible in the address bar at the top of this page) while in IE7 or above.  You can see your feeds if you click on Favorites and then the Feeds tab.

Microsoft Outlook also allows RSS feed subscriptions, and directions on setting that up can be found here.

We also talked about one blog in particular that collects feeds from various cataloging-related blogs that is good to follow, either on its own or in your blog aggregator, Planet Cataloging. Links to that blog and a number of others will be posted to the LCLS delicious account, which can also be found on the LCLS website under What’s New -> Social Media.

Feel free to post any questions, comments or additional information on RSS feeds below in the comments section.
